Funeral services to honor the life of Mr. Whitlock will be held 3:00 PM Wednesday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Liberty Memorial Gardens.
Rufus N. “Buck” Whitlock, 91, of 605 Slab Bridge Road, passed away peacefully Monday morning with both of his loving daughters by his side at Richard Campbell Veteran’s Nursing Home. Born in Liberty, he was the widower of Lucille Roper Whitlock and a son of the late S.E. “Jack” and Lula Whitlock. He was retired from DeFore Mills and he served his country during World War II in the United States Navy.
He was a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. He loved to work in his garden and his specialty was tomatoes and onions.
Surviving are 2 daughters, Cheryl Barnes of Liberty and Janet Pilgrim (Jimmy) of Six Mile; 2 grandchildren, Kevin Barnes of Liberty and Angela Higgins of Easley; and 4 great grandchildren, Channing Barnes, Brooke Higgins, Kendra Barnes, and Hallie Walls; three great great grandchildren, Rayleigh, Adaleigh, and Trinity.
In addition to his wife and parents he was predeceased by his step-mother, who raised him, Jessie Black Whitlock, a son in law, Dale Barnes, a great grandson, Matthew Church, and 4 sisters and 2 brothers. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
The family will be at the home of Cheryl Barnes, 611 Summit Drive, Liberty SC.
Flowers will be accepted but memorials are requested to Patriot Hospice, 54 Bear Drive, Greenville SC 29605.
