Sheryl Lynn “Shery” Nelms, 54, of Easley, South Carolina, died Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at her residence.

Born in Anderson, she was the daughter of William Edward Hiott, Sr. and Linda Fay Kyzer Hiott.

Shery was a 1987 graduate of Wren High School and later graduated from Lander University with a degree in education. She worked 29 years as a teacher, starting her career in the Charleston area prior to moving back to the upstate where she later retired from Gettys Middle School.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Piedmont where she played the piano on occasion. She enjoyed playing the piano and volunteered her talents playing for nursing home residents.

Surviving in addition to her parents of Piedmont are her husband of 24 years, J.H. Nelms of the home; a brother, Eddie Hiott (Pam) of Honea Path; one aunt, Mary Lou Helix of Concord, CA; one uncle, Tony Kyzer of Myrtle Beach; also surviving are numerous other relatives and friends.

Memorial services are being planned and will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Piedmont, 8 1^st Baptist Church Road, Piedmont SC 29673.

Mrs.Nelms taught me English in 7th grade during Covid she was an amazing teacher and person all around and really enjoyed her work and she will always be one of my favorite teachers.

Shery was a true force to be reckoned with. I am deeply saddened to hear of her passing. Shery was a compassionate and beautiful individual in so many ways. I was truly blessed to be a part of her life and will forever cherish the times and memories we shared together at Lander. To Edd, Linda and family, may Gods healing hands be with you during this time of need.

Shery was my best friend at Lander. I am sad to just now hear of her passing. Shery was a significant part of my life and continues to inspire me today. We were inseparable for years. As time went on we lost contact. I wish we had not. The world will be dimmer due to her absence. I wish to let her family know how much I still love her. I went to Lander with Shery. I just learned about this through another classmate. I'm stunned... Shery was one of the sweetest people I knew. My heart is heavy right now. Lifting her family up in prayer. ??

I taught with Sheri at Birney Middle School in North Charleston. She was an excellent teacher and a wonderful friend. Condolences to JH and the families.

Ms H was such an amazing person. She was also my 6th grade teacher. She loved her kids she taught. She cared for us like we were her own. She helped shape my life. Beautiful soul gone too soon. RIH Sheryl.

I went all through school at Wren with Shery. I’m so sorry to hear of her passing. My prayers are with your family.

I taught next to Shery for my first two years teaching. Some of my favorite memories were her humor, her love of flowy pants and the year of her retirement where she played the best music every morning! She made me feel comfortable and welcomed.

Sherry was a wonderful lady. I loved her smile and enjoyed the brief time I worked with her.
