With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Gary Lee Sparks, a beloved husband, father, brother, and friend. He was born on September 23, 1940, in New Castle, IN, to the late Pofice Lee Sparks and Helen Whitt Sparks Foster.
Gary’s vibrant spirit and passion for life touched the hearts of all who knew him. He peacefully passed away on Monday, December 18, 2023 in the comfort of his home in Sunset, SC, at the age of 83.
Gary’s journey was marked by both determination and ingenuity. Although he did not obtain a college degree, his natural talents and relentless dedication led him to become a successful engineer in the automotive industry and later became self-employed in general construction. He brought his expertise and craftsmanship to countless projects, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
A true patriot, he served his country with honor, proudly serving on an aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. His time in the Navy instilled in him a deep sense of duty and loyalty, values that he carried with him throughout his life.
Beyond his professional and military accomplishments, Gary was a man of many passions. He had an insatiable curiosity and a deep love for history. But there was one hobby that truly captured his heart – model trains. Creating intricate landscapes and meticulously operating his trains brought him a great sense of joy and contentment. Through his hobby, he showcased his creativity and attention to detail, leaving behind miniature worlds of wonder.
A devout member of Pickens Presbyterian Church, Gary found solace and community in his faith. He valued the friendships he formed within the congregation and actively participated in church activities.
He was a true jack of all trades, possessing the remarkable ability to build and fix anything that crossed his path. Whether it was a complex construction project or a simple repair around the house, he approached each task with enthusiasm and skill. His talent and dedication will forever inspire those who had the pleasure of witnessing his handiwork.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Janice “Jan” Hale Sparks, who stood by his side throughout their journey, and his children Carmen Cole, Tamika Ryan, Scott Sparks, and Jae Sparks; his step-daughter, Jennipher Isley. He is also survived by his sister, Donna Figlinsky, and his brother, Danny Sparks. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of his family, who will forever treasure the precious moments they shared with him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Farris and a step-daughter, Robin Huffine.
In accordance with Gary’s wishes, a private cremation will take place. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date, allowing friends and family to gather, reminisce, and honor the remarkable person that Gary was.
