It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Franklin Whitlock, 84, of Liberty, South Carolina, who departed this life on February 4, 2026. Born on January 31, 1942, in Liberty, SC, he was a son of the late Marion and Inez Gaines Whitlock.
He spent his life as a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend to many.
Gary proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from June 26, 1961, until his discharge on June 7, 1965, attaining the rank of E2.
After his service, Gary went on to forge a successful career, serving many years as a supervisor at Sangamo and later retiring from Hiott Printing in Pickens. His work ethic and dedication were admired by all who had the privilege to work alongside him.
Beyond his professional life, Gary was a remarkable man who embraced life with enthusiasm. He was an avid golfer and cherished his time spent at the Country Club, often seen enjoying the sport he loved. His passion for sports extended beyond the green; he was a dedicated sports fan and enjoyed every moment spent cheering on his favorite teams. Gary also had a knack for puzzles, finding joy and satisfaction in piecing together intricate pictures, a reflection of his thoughtful nature.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, June Glouse Whitlock; his son, Chris Whitlock; his sister, Joan Stephens; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Whitlock and Doris Seay; two brothers-in-law, Frankie Glouse (Julie), and Gerald Glouse (Cheryl). Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews and close friends that he loved dearly. They hold his memory close and will carry his spirit forward in their lives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Tommy Whitlock, and Dolan T. “Dody” Whitlock.
A private graveside service to celebrate Gary’s life will be held at Hillcrest Memorial Park. No formal visitation is planned; however, his remains will lie in state on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, from 1:00 until 5:00 PM at the Liberty Mortuary where friends and family may pay their respects.
As we say farewell to Gary, let us remember the laughter, love, and light he brought into our lives. His spirit will forever remain a cherished part of those he loved and who loved him in return. In lieu of flowers memorials are requested to Hilltop Wesleyan Church, 735 Golden Creek Road, Liberty SC 29657.
