A memorial service to honor the life of Dr. Allen will be held Saturday at 12:00 noon in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Dr. Leonard R. Allen, 92, died July 20, 2014. Born in Morgansville, West Virginia, he was the first child of Glen and Amanda Gaskins Allen. In 1942-43 he built B-26 bombers at Glen L. Martin, where he met his wife. In January 1944 he married Nannie Mae Love and joined the U.S. Army Air Corp., serving as a radio mechanic and instructor. Upon his discharge, he moved to S.C. In 1949 he enrolled in Clemson A&M College. In three years he earned (with highest honor) a B.S. in Agronomy and Soils. Joining the Agricultural Extension Service, he served as assistant county agent from 1952-1961 in Greenwood and Bamberg Counties. In 1961 he enrolled in Auburn University. In three years he earned a M.S. and a Ph.D in Agronomy and Soils. In 1964 he returned to Clemson and became a State Extension Specialist in Agronomy and Soils. He later moved into research and retired from Clemson as an associate professor in 1982.
He is survived by his wife, Nannie Mae Love Allen; two sons, Michael Allen(Elaine) of Easley and Gary Allen(Merry) of Moncks Corner, SC; two grandchildren, Chris Allen(Christie) and April Allen Ayling; and four great grandchildren, Abby and Ellie Ayling and Bailey and Reese Allen, all of Moncks Corner.
