Funeral services to celebrate Phil’s life will be conducted 1:00 PM Saturday, September 14, 2019 in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel. Burial will be at Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at the mortuary.

Julius Phillip “Phil” Merck, 66, of 494 Maw Bridge Road, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at the Cottingham Hospice House. Born in Easley he was a son of the late Julius Clarence and Margaret Byrd Merck.

He was an avid outdoorsman, who loved to hunt and walk thru the woods.

Phil’s friendly demeanor blessed him with a multitude of friends and he will be greatly missed by all of them.

Surviving are a sister, Marilyn Swords (Mike) of Liberty; a brother, Roger Merck (Linda) of Central; a special friend, James Whitmire (Karen) of Sunset; also surviving are several nieces and nephews and lifelong friends.

The family will be at their respective homes. Online condolences may be left for the family by visiting www.libertymortuary.com. Liberty Mortuary is handling arrangements.

I will always have a special love in my heart for Phil. I remember in high school how I teased him about his long hair and called him Phyllis (I'm sure he knew I really loved it). I can see him in my memory walking across the pasture with his fishing pole heading to the pond. He teased me about my treasured '64 Ford Galaxy with its 390 engine. He asked how many cords of wood I had to chop just to start it up....... Oh my, I think of him every day. What a sweetheart & faithful friend.

So sorry to hear about Phil's passing away.I've known him since we were about 16,and say him around ocasionaly .I last saw him about a month ago on Alexander road on Lake. Keowee,gave him. My number and we agreed to talk and catch up,on days gone by .He never lost his abilty to smile and never changed.I was out of town and could not attend his service,but will,always remember his great outlook on whatever he faced. RIP my friend ,.

This is a shock. Phil was a good guy and my neighbor. He will be missed for sure My condolences to Roger and the rest of his family. God bless and keep him.

Going to miss my friend, cousin, and archery buddy! Going to miss all those times at the Merck Family Reunions when we would "compare plates" with each other and he would always give me that "grin" and tell me to take it easy the rest of the day! Prayers for all family and friends. Robby Merck

Phil was the most kind & gentle soul that I have ever known. We were close in school. Hung out with him a lot. We used to go ghost hunting when we were in school. He was so funny. Reconnected several yrs. back and always saw him at Walmart and car shows. What a legacy you leave behind. Phil you are going to be missed.

I've known Phil practically all my life so there's not enough time to tell all of my memories of Phil and the adventures we have had. I can tell you we fished, hunted, rode dirt bikes, walked the woods and I had the good fortune to introduce him to archery which he enjoyed immensely, and he introduced me to Cruising Pickens, which later resulted in my wife of 36 yrs. We've stayed close and I count him as my dearest friend. Love you Phil and I'll miss you. Thoughts and prayers to all his family. Tim Dyar

Phil was a all around wonderful person. We feel blessed to have had him for a friend. Phil always would brighten your day because he could find a sense of humor in any conversation that could make you smile when you were having a bad day.We will always cherish the memories of the Traditional Bow 3D target shoots with Phil ( usually a compound bow hunter) so many laughs.
