Dorothy “Dot” Owings

Dot Owings of Greenville, SC passed away peacefully, May 3, 2015, at her daughter’s home in Charlotte, NC, where she had been residing for the last 4 years. She was born December 22, 1922 in Owings, SC to the late John Cleon and Alva Willis.
In addition to her parents, Dot was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, James (Jim) William Owings, a brother, “Buck” Willis of Laurens, SC, and a sister, Katie Given of Deland, Florida. She is survived by a daughter, Susan Wollin (Jim) of Charlotte, NC, a son, Bill Owings (Jane) of Blythewood, SC, three sisters, Sadie Rice of Greenville, SC, Sara Gambrell of Clemson, SC, and Jane Craddock (Mel) of Ashville, NC. “Granny Dot” is also survived by five grandchildren, Amy Glosson (Brad) of pCharlotte, NC, Jamie Wollin (Holle) of Charlotte, NC, Tripp Owings (Beth) of Lugoff, SC, Ginny Causey (Chris) of Boston, MA and Laura Malloy (Michael) of Cayce, SC; nine great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dot graduated from Winthrop College in 1943. She taught school at Laurens High School, Gray-Court Owings School, and Lake Forest Elementary School in Greenville, SC. She later completed her second degree in Library Science and worked as the Librarian at Lake Forest Elementary School.
Dot was a charter member of Aldersgate UMC in Greenville, where she taught Sunday School, served as the first UMW President, started and operated the church library, and was an active member of the Susanna Wesley circle and the Christian Friendship Sunday School class. Dot served on numerous boards and committees at Aldersgate. She received a Special Recognition in 2009 for her many years of faithful service to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, at which time the library was dedicated in her honor and named The Dorothy Owings Library. The Christian Friendship Class and Susanna Wesley Circle will serve as Honorary Pallbearers. Dot was also a devoted Girl Scout leader for eight years.
Dot and Jim enjoyed traveling. Their many trips included China, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Canada, England and all over the US. Dot assisted Jim for many years in planning and leading wonderful trips with their “Prime Timers” from Aldersgate. Dot’s life centered around her love for God, family, friends and her church. Her heart overflowed with love for others. Dot served her Lord Jesus and set an example for all on how to live the Christian life.

Funeral services to celebrate Dot’s life will be held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church on Friday, May 8 at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 until 1:00PM at the church. Liberty Mortuary is handling arrangments.
