It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing of Clarence Roger Merck, a beloved husband, father, papa and friend, who departed this life on February 4, 2026, at the age of 78.
Born on December 15, 1947, in Greenville, SC he was a son of the late Julius Clarence and Margaret Byrd Merck.
Roger’s journey through life was marked by dedication, hard work, and a love for his family and community. After he graduated from D.W. Daniel High School, he found his calling in the energy production industry, where he served as a Nuclear Maintenance Technician at Duke Energy. His remarkable 44-year career was a testament to his commitment and expertise-qualities he carried into every aspect of his life.
Following his retirement, Roger channeled his passion for community support by joining his wife, Linda, in running their local feed store, The Rabbit Box, in Central. Together, they created a welcoming space for their neighbors and friends, embodying the spirit of generosity and hard work that he was known for.
An avid hunter and a devoted caretaker of his farm animals, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was a staunch supporter of the Daniel Lions Football team, always in the bleachers cheering on the young athletes, fostering a sense of camaraderie and community.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Linda Merck; his son, Jason Merck (Alicia); a stepdaughter, Melanie Gillespie (Dale); a stepson, Eric Elrod (Kim); also surviving are four grandchildren, Karly, Kyle, Kaylee, and Jace; a great granddaughter, Lillie Mae.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Phil Merck and a sister, Marilyn Swords.
