Joy Whitlock Whitaker, 71, of 114 Whitaker Street, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Easley she was the widow of Wallace “Yank” Whitaker and a daughter of the late Roy and Ruby Gantt Whitlock. She retired from the School District of Pickens County where she worked as a teacher’s assistant, and she was also the Owner/Operator of Joy’s Café in Liberty where she worked with her late husband for 28 years.
Joy was a member of East Side Baptist Church, and during her free time she love singing, traveling and spending time with her family.
Surviving are two daughters, Missy Ricken (Richard) and Mandy Partain (Tommy) all of Liberty; a son, Jody Whitaker (Dana) of Liberty; a sister, Anita Gillespie (Jimmy) of Liberty; 8 grandchildren, Kip Partain (Kaitlyn), Brett Ricken (Tiffany), Chad Ricken (Bre), Michelle Hawkins (Eric), Miranda Dalton, Hope Ricken, Hannah Whitaker, and Houston Whitaker; three great-grandchildren, Conner, Owen, and Kasen.
In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests memorials be made to the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Building Fund, 101 Pisgah Road, Easley SC 29642.
Following the service on Friday the family will be at the home of Mandy and Tommy Partain, 321 Spring Valley Road, Liberty SC.

I was blessed to become friends with Joy and her family while in college doing a summer job in 1985. my first summer away from my home state of Iowa. I was first drawn in to her mom and dad and always hoped they would be at the cafe when I stopped in. They were wonderful to me. My standout memory of Joy was years later on some visit I had made while living in Charlotte. Not exactly sure what the conversation was but I wanted to know what her impression was of me back during that summer. Not really wanting to hear the answer lol she said, "we just thought you needed lots of looking after." I can only hope she didn't realize what an understatement that was. Her children said it best on her Facebook page on how best to remember their mom. "God, family, and friends in that order" How much better our world would be if we would all remember to live by her priorities. I will do my best Joy. I better because I know you are watching me now :) See you again sometime. Say hi to Yank and your mom and dad for me. Love you.
