Funeral services to honor Roger’s life will be 11:00 AM Saturday in the Liberty Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Steve McLane and Rev. Ralph Carter, Sr.. Burial will follow at Liberty Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be prior to the service from 10:00 until 11:00 AM at the mortuary.
Roger Dale Swords, 62, beloved husband, father, and grandfather went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 19, 2011 after a brief illness at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC.
A lifelong resident of Liberty, Roger was the son of the late Ernest Swords and the late Pearl Swords. He served in the United States Army. He was retired from the maintenance department of Greenwood Mills, and worked several years thereafter for the City of Liberty in various capacities, including Director of Public Works. He surrendered his life to the Lord in 1983, and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Liberty. He was predeceased by five brothers: Arthur Swords, Austin Swords, Alton Swords, Fred Swords, and Doyle Swords. He was also predeceased by three sisters: Betty Lyda, Dorothy Lovell, and Grace Calimer.
In addition to his loving wife of 45 years, Diane Swords, he is survived by a daughter: Amanda Cruz and husband Noe Cruz of Greer. Two sons: Dr. Brian Swords (Liberty), and Chris Swords and wife Lisa Swords (Liberty). In addition, he is survived by one brother: Ray Swords of Liberty and wife Clarice and a loving mother-in-law, Edith Head. He was also survived by the “lights of his life”, four beautiful grandchildren – Alexis Maria Cruz, Logan Luis Cruz, Isabella Sofia Cruz, and Connor Brian Swords.
