Tina Summey
Liberty, SC
Tina Marie Turner Summey passed away peacefully at home in Liberty, SC surrounded by her family and friends. She was born in 1958 and was a 1977 graduate of Easley High School. She was the daughter of Allen and Linda Sprouse and was preceded in death by her father, as well as her husband John Summey. She is survived by two sisters, Tammy Keeler and Terri Bruce.
Tina was a uniquely wonderful person, who was loved by many. She was beautiful from the inside out and her kindness to others knew no bounds. She was a proud member of Calumet Baptist Church, where she served as a children’s Sunday school teacher, and worked in the nursery as well. Tina was also known for helping others in need. If she knew of anyone struggling, she would be the first person to step up and offer assistance in any way she could. She was also a volunteer, and an advocate for the American Cancer Society and St. Jude Children’s Hospital, even before she was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
She was a hard worker, and proudly served as a spinner and weaver at JP Stevens Dunean Mill for over twenty years before the company restructured. She then worked for Ryobi, followed by Reliable Sprinkler Systems. Tina loved spending time with her work friends, whether it be picnics, barbecues, concerts, or watching Clemson football. Her favorite NFL team was the Green Bay Packers, and she wore her fan gear proudly. She was a cheerleader in many aspects of her life, as she lovingly supported her two children, Sonya Summey Miller (Shane), and John Derek Summey (Laura) in everything they did. She was a proud grandmother of two, John Chapin Summey and Mercy Lee Summey. Those children were her world and kept her going through her long battle with Cancer.
When Tina was first diagnosed with Leukemia in 2017, her Doctors said the prognosis was grim and that someone with this type of Cancer may only live 2-4 years at best, even with treatment. Tina fought hard for seven long years, as she was determined to make a lasting impact on the lives of her grandchildren. She achieved remission three times, which is extraordinarily rare for someone with that disease. Ultimately, God decided that it was time to call her home. Tina was a fighter, and her legacy of love and strength will live on for many years to come.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Francis Cancer Center, as well as the fifth-floor Oncology Unit of St. Francis Hospital downtown. Her team of Doctors and Nurses gave impeccable care and her family will be forever grateful.
No service is planned at this time, but donations to the following organizations are highly encouraged- The American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation. The family covets your prayers at this time.
