It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Mrs. Phyllis Gilstrap Hendricks, who left us peacefully on July 18, 2026, at the age of 82.

Born on April 28, 1944, in Liberty, SC, she was the widow of David Clayton Hendricks and a daughter of the late Dennis Z. and Effie Pressley Gilstrap.

Mrs. Hendricks dedicated her life to serving others, primarily through her work as a Teaching Assistant and also a Library Assistant at Six Mile Elementary School with the School District of Pickens County. She retired from a career that she cherished, making a lasting impact on the lives of countless students and families in her community.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three sons, Al Hendricks (Marybeth), Eric Hendricks, (Sandy), and Mark Hendricks (Marilee), and her daughter, Jane Whitmore (Brian). She also held a special place in her heart for her beloved sister, June Masters (Weldon). Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, Scott Hendricks, Clay Hendricks, Jenna Maness, Trevor Hendricks, Erica Hendricks, Olivia Hendricks, Gracie Hendricks, and Lydia Whitmore, along with 5 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Brewer.

She was known for her warmth, her infectious laughter, and her incredible culinary skills-she loved nothing more than gathering her family around the table to share a meal and create memories together.

A devoted member of Kings Grove Baptist Church, she found joy in her faith and community. She will be remembered for her kindness, her nurturing spirit, and her unwavering commitment to those she loved.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1:30 until 2:15 PM at the Liberty Mortuary, followed by a service at 2:30PM in the chapel. Private burial will be held at Kings Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

As we say goodbye to Phyllis, let us carry forward her legacy of compassion, family, and community spirit. She will be missed dearly.

To Phyl’s children my heart is broken to see this about my precious friend. We had the best time working together at SixMile Elementary. She kept me in stitches most of the time with her comments and dry wit. I know you four are lost without her. You were her life!

So very sorry for your loss, seems like like yesterday we were kids and riding bikes up and down the hills at Foxfire and these days seemed so far away. You may or may not remember me, I moved back to Lancaster after graduation and lost touch with so many. God bless and comfort you all

I'm am so sorry to hear about the loss of Mrs. Hendricks. She was always so sweet to everyone. I am so glad I had the chance to know her through school and often thought about her. She was still so kind whenever I ran into her in town. She definitely will be missed

I am saddened to hear of Miss Phyllis' passing. I worked with her from 1994 until she retired. My classroom was across the hallway from the library and had many days of sharing laughter and smiles. Both of my children had the great privilege of knowing her and loving her. Miss Phyllis will surely be missed on this side of heaven, but I know she is enjoying her eternal fellowship with Jesus, her husband, family, and friends.

I loved Phyllis so much and knew she loved me. I had the privilege to work with her at Six Mile Elementary in the mid 80’s , early 90’s. My prayers are with all her precious family. She lived a good and full life blessing everyone she came in contact with.

Peace of mind is a call away. We’re here when you need us most.

June and family, I am sorry that Phyllis has passed. My mind flashed back to Six Mile memories that were made over 60 years ago. Stopping by your house on the big yellow school bus. In retrospect life was slower and safer then than it is today. I am glad to have traveled those days with you.

My sweet friend from our Sixmile Elementary days. I enjoyed our visit a few weeks back & as soon as I entered the room her face lit up & she called the name that she always called me "Cindy" I will always treasure that! Sincere thoughts & prayers to you all during this loss.
